Modular Town est un instrument qu'on visite. Chaque bâtiment est un module du synthé, les habitants ont des sons à te faire écouter, et le tram de la ligne 81 t'emmène d'un quartier à l'autre, jusqu'à une île et une ville néon.Modular Town is an instrument you visit. Every building is a module of the synth, the townsfolk have sounds to play you, and the line-81 tram takes you from one neighbourhood to the next, as far as an island and a neon city.

Une aventure point-and-clickA point-and-click adventure
On ne règle pas Modular Town, on s'y promène. On fait glisser la rue, on clique sur un bâtiment pour tourner ses boutons, sur un passant pour qu'il te joue son son, sur le thermomètre pour faire tomber la neige. La guichetière du terminus explique tout, et le tram te dépose où tu veux.
You don't set Modular Town up, you walk around in it. Drag the street, click a building to turn its knobs, a passer-by to hear their sound, the thermometer to make it snow. The ticket clerk at the terminus explains everything, and the tram drops you wherever you like.
Rien n'est caché derrière une progression : tous les sons sont là dès le départ, chaque trajet se passe d'un clic, et la ville se souvient de l'endroit où tu étais.
Nothing is locked behind progress: every sound is there from the start, any trip can be skipped with a click, and the town remembers where you were.

Le synthéThe synth
Sous les façades, un vrai synthé soustractif polyphonique : deux oscillateurs, un filtre en échelle, une enveloppe complète, un LFO, un delay et une réverbe. Chaque réglage est écrit sur un bâtiment, avec de vrais boutons, assez grands pour qu'on s'y retrouve.
Under the façades, a real polyphonic subtractive synth: two oscillators, a ladder filter, a full envelope, an LFO, a delay and a reverb. Every control is written on a building, with real knobs, big enough to find your way.

Sur le panneau de patch, on branche des câbles comme sur un vrai modulaire : le LFO, l'enveloppe ou le hasard (un sample & hold) vers le filtre, la hauteur, la résonance, le delay ou la forme d'onde du deuxième oscillateur.
On the patch panel you plug cables like on a real modular: the LFO, the envelope or randomness (a sample & hold) into the filter, the pitch, the resonance, the delay or the second oscillator's waveform.
Un peu plus loin, la tour Motions est un séquenceur d'effets rythmiques : le volume, le filtre, le panoramique, l'écho et la bande pulsent en mesure, pas après pas.
A little further on, the Motions tower is a rhythmic effects sequencer: volume, filter, pan, echo and tape pulse in time, step by step.
Les six disques du disquaireThe record shop's six records
Chez le disquaire, chaque pochette change le moteur du synthé. Et si tu lui déposes un fichier MIDI, la ville le joue toute seule.
At the record shop, each sleeve changes the synth's engine. And if you drop a MIDI file there, the town plays it by itself.
Quand il neigeWhen it snows
Le thermomètre de la première maison fait venir l'hiver. La neige tombe, les toits blanchissent, le canal gèle… et le synthé passe en FM. Le filtre devient l'indice de modulation, la résonance le feedback, les formes d'onde les rapports entre opérateurs. Un deuxième cran pousse le grand froid.
The thermometer on the first house brings winter. Snow falls, roofs turn white, the canal freezes… and the synth turns FM. The filter becomes the modulation index, the resonance the feedback, the waveforms the operator ratios. A second notch brings the deep cold.
La nuit, les fenêtres s'allument une à une, les guirlandes brillent sur le quai et le son devient plus doux, plus long. Le tram continue sa tournée.
At night, the windows light up one by one, the garlands glow along the quay and the sound turns softer and longer. The tram keeps doing its rounds.
Le parc et Lau's BarThe park and Lau's Bar
Au parc, le compositeur joue sur son banc, le kiosque donne un concert de Mellotron, et sa petite maison cache tous les réglages de son Modular One. Plus loin sur la dune, Lau's Bar et son groupe inventent un nouveau morceau à chaque fois : accords, basse, soliste et violon. On choisit sur l'ardoise.
In the park, the composer plays on his bench, the bandstand gives a Mellotron concert, and his little house hides every setting of his Modular One. Further along the dune, Lau's Bar and its band make up a new song every time: chords, bass, soloist and violin. Pick on the chalkboard.
Neon Town
Un soir, le tram décolle. De l'autre côté de la mer de nuit, une ville du futur où il pleut toujours : le bar à nouilles de Walt, des tours à perte de vue, un mur de petits écrans pour choisir son son, et un globe holographique qui garde tous les réglages. Ici, le synthé joue les cuivres et les nappes des films des années 80.
One evening, the tram takes off. Across the night sea, a city of the future where it always rains: Walt's noodle bar, towers as far as the eye can see, a wall of small screens to pick your sound, and a holographic globe holding every setting. Here the synth plays the brass and pads of 80's films.
